Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Fine-tuning the white-knuckled "car chase" formula of its predecessor, Driver 2 features more of the same high-speed, inner-city vehicular mayhem, casting players once again as Tanner, a hard-boiled undercover cop who is posing as a bad-ass getaway driver, this time to stop an international mob war.

With computer-animated cinematic sequences doing the lion's share of the storytelling, players must guide Tanner through more than 40 action-packed missions in four different city settings, this time on foot--which primarily allows Tanner to carjack other vehicles--as well as behind the wheel.

While it can be of a lot of fun to play, Driver 2 is no joyride. The missions can be quite unforgiving, requiring many restarts to complete, and the cops are quite determined even at the "Easy" setting. Also, the game's coarse, choppy 3-D graphics often get in the way of things, with slowdowns disrupting the game's pace, and buildings and such popping up out of nowhere. --Joe Hon

Product Description

Violence threatens to ignite America when a US crimelord's money-man cuts a deal with his greatest rival, a Brazilian gangster. Tanner teams up with Tobias Jones and they head out, undercover, to try and keep them apart. What does the money-man know? Where's he hiding? Who's Rosanna Soto? What else is between the crimelord and the gangster? How long has Tanner got to find out?

With four new cities, including Chicago, Havana, Las Vegas and Rio de Janeiro, curved roads and flyovers, 30 cars to drive and five two-player driving games Driver 2 will have you struggling to work your way through the 40 undercover missions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect, 4 May 2002
By A Customer
This game takes the original concept of its predecessor and makes it better... sort of. Indeed the FMV's of driver 2 are breathtaking and make up for the game's flaws. The soundtrack is superb and almost everything about this game is perfect.
Then, however, we move on to in game graphics. The fact that driver 2's in game graphics look so bad isn't because they're made badly made, it's simply because they're too good for playback on a playstation. If you've already heard these rumours, I'm sorry to confirm that the in game graphics of this game are worse than the first. The gameplay jerks in places, buildings disappear, and none of the scenery or cars look as crisp as they did in the first game.
If you can grit that, then Driver 2 is an extremely enjoyable game. The cities are accurately depicted and bends and round-abouts on roads add realism where the original lacked it. New features such as 2 player mode and "Car Jacking" make the game much better. And despite its flaws driver 2 still manages to impress. Definitely recommended - for those with a strong stomach for some bad graphics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 19 April 2002
You COULD say the graphics are worse. They're certainly more fragile than Driver's. Then you realise how much detail this game is packing in. The driving (and walking) environments are so vast and so well textured that it's hardly surprising that they pop up and disintegrate a bit. The point is - it in NO way spoiled the game for me. There are more attractive and more realistic city environments, packed with a wonderful assortment of vehicles. From small sedans to massive jeeps, lorries, buses, limosines, fire engines, ambulances and of course police cars. All these vehicles move much more intelligently and realistically than they did in the first game.

Anyway, it's a wonderful driving experience. All the thrills of the first game except on a much grander scale - the HUGE cities with curved roads and more or less infinite exploration value make it a superb sequel, in my opinion. Plus a more thoughtful plot with some amazing cut scenes tying the frantic missions together. Excellent cars, spot on physics, plus the ability to get out of the car and steal any other vehicle (including all those previously mentioned and much more)!

Multiplayer is fun too - you just have to put up with a first person view. It's not much to ask.

Superb.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better, 29 Nov 2001
When I spent long, joyful hours playing Driver on the playstation I was stunned as to how good the game is. The graphics, the gameplay, the sheer quality of the game is enough to turn the heads of people who don't even like driving games.

Naturally, you expect a seqel to a game to be even better than the first, and in most cases this is the case (Gran Turismo 2, Quake 2, Crash Bandicoot 2 are all examples). However, while Driver 2 is an excellent game, it doesn't quite match the quality of Driver; which is a pity because if you play a sequel that is worse than the original you don't feel happy or joyful, but disappointed.

What Driver 2 has done - which has given it an advantage - is almost ignore what happened with Driver and produce a completely new game which is aimed to be different, and better, than the original. This helps it because when you are playing Driver 2, you forget how good Driver is, and concentrate on the quality of Driver 2.

Contradictory to what I have just said, Driver 2 has all the original features of Driver, and not much else. But it does have a multiplayer option, which is a big improvement to the original; and another big advantage is the availability to get out of your car. This means that you don't have to worry about giving your car lots of damage, because you can get out and knick another one.

The one big area that Driver 2 is lacking is the graphics. The graphics are worse than Driver rather than better, which is what they should have been. The makers of this game have hurried this game too much to repeat the success of Driver.

Overall, this is a brilliant game and I would highly recommend it to driving fans. But there are some finer points which could be improved to make this game even better.
